Voltaire once said that "History is a pack of tricks that we play on the dead."
History is a chronological narrative of the development of man, and as Edward Hallett Carr would add, it is the continual process whereby an historian's mind interacts with data.
Leopold von Ranke once wrote the following in his Histories of the Latin and Germanic Nations: "To history has been assigned the office of judging the past, of instructing the present for the benefit of future ages. To such high offices this work does not aspire: It wants only to show what actually happened (wie es eigentlich gewesen ist).
Humanities Essential Questions
1. According to Protagoras, "Man is the Measure of all things." Do we see reasons to affirm or challenge his assessment?
2. How have the arts been shaped by the spirit of an age or how have the arts shaped the spirit of an age?
3. How have great personalities shaped human development through such things as creative and/or scientific innovations, religious influence, and economic and political activities?
4. How have impersonal forces and movements shaped human development?

1. How has the Western View of humanity's place in the cosmos evolved over time?
2. What has brought Europeans to go to war? How have patterns of conflict changed over time?
3. How has an emerging Western individualistic worldview shaped history? How has the conflict between individual interests and collective interests shaped various Western philosophies and ideologies?
4. What is freedom? How has the meaning of freedom changed over time?
5. What is a right? How has the meaning of "rights" changed over time?
6. What effect have geography and climate had on Europe's history?
7. What is an impersonal force? What does it mean to say that an "impersonal force" is shaping history? How have they shaped history?
8. What is the political spectrum?
9. What is ideology? How have various Western ideologies formed?
10. How has the role of religion changed over European history?
11. How have Europeans thought about the origin and purpose of society and government?
12. What role do the arts (fine and folk) play in a society's cultural life?
